At a time when we all seem to be connected it is still complicated, in some cases, to be able to enjoy Internet in country properties. Even so, if you are an owner or you have a country properties to rent, it is possible to have internet.

01Internet in a country property. Nothing the same as in a city:

It is not so easy to have a connection as it would be in a city or in coastal areas but it is not impossible.

Telecommunication infrastructures in small mountain villages and in many other places are more limited than in the cities. This means that it may happen there is no mobile signal and therefore impossible to connect to the internet via the mobile operator.

In any case there are different solutions for having an internet connection in these places.   Rural ADSL, landline, via mobile phone line.

02Internet in a country property: Rural Adsl

Rural ADSL connection is the solution to having an internet connection when it is impossible to have any other type. There are various companies offering this service ..

The installation and service costs of this type of connection are always higher and the speed slower, normally between 1 and 3

Installation costs are app. 900 Euros including the equipment and the cost of the service depends on the type of contract you have varying between 55 Euros and 185 Euros.

03Internet in a country property: Internet by mobile 3G / 4G

If you have cover on your telephone this is one option to have internet in your country property.  The mobile telephone companies offer this service and it is necesary to have a special adaptor / card for to utilise it.  This type of connection is a little more expensive than a cable connection and is a little slower.  The major disadvantage is that there is a limit on data usage and if you use it excessively your tariff will rise rapidly..

There is the possibility of 3G and 4G although in rural areas the only option is 3G as 4G as isolated rural areas find it difficult to reach 4 G. 3G offers speeds up to 7Mb while 4G offers up to 150 Mb

There are different prices in each company ranging between 30 and 50 €.

04Internet in a country property : Wifi 5G.

As we have mentioned earlier, in the majority of rural zones there is 3G, in very few 4G.  At this present time Internet of 5G in a country property is impossible.

Southern Korea, Singapore and Japan are in a race to be the first to launch 5G. It should be available commercially between 2019 and 2020.

5G technology offers much more rapid download and upload speeds, it will increase the transfer speed, reduce the response time from any mobile mobile device and makes it possible to have simultaneous connection to the internet from a larger number of devices. It is expected that it will use less energy and therefore batterries will last longer.

05Internet in a country property: Wimax.

Wimax is one of the most popular types of technologies for having internet in a country property. There are a large amount of Wimax operators in Spain  both local and regional which offer an internet connection in isolated areas or where it is to expensive to install ADSL or Fibre Optic.

These operators have antennae connected to the internet which emit a signal to more than 30 km distance.  It is technology similar to Wifi but with a larger reach.

To be connected, users with a contract with Wimax will have to have an little antenna on the outside of their house, orientated  correctly to communicate with the operator.  Usina a cable, this antenna connects with a router in the interior of the house and from this router, same as with ADSL, to the computer ( by cable or wifi).

There are enough providers who offer this type of internet connection.  All that is neccessay is a small antenna and you can connect with a transmittor within some kilometres. For sure this type of technology requires a clear line from the house to the transmittor to function correctly. Therefore the most important thing to know if you will have cover  is the location of the house:  however there are very few houses where it is not possible.

The majority of the providers have a webpage where you can put in the location of the house and you can see if you will have cover or not on any of them.

There are different Internet speeds with Wimax and different packages, with either prepaid or monthly payments depending on the provider. The approximate prices depend on the operator:

*Monthly payment prices: Between 25€ for 6mbps up to 50€ for 20mbps. Also of course, the cost of installation of the equipment, between 60 and 100 Euros

*Prepaid tariffs : This option is a good solution for rental holiday homes or small hotels.  The facility it offers is that you can use for days, weeks or months and only pay for what you have used  Prices for 6mbps are app:

1 month: 30€

2 weeks: 20€

1 week: 12€

3 days: 9€

1 day : 4€

Also the cost of installation is between 175 and 200 Euros.

06Internet in a country property : Satelite

This option offers the possibility to have internet in any country property.  It functions by using a parbolic antenna which receives a signal from the satellite.  There are different packages with speeds up to 30MB.  The disadvantage of this type of connection is that data usage is limited and when it is exceeded, the navigation speed diminishes. Prices vary between 50 and 100 Euros per month and in the majority of cases there is no installation cost.

It is good to know that you can have an internet connection in your country property that can be used for multichannel television, streaming TV,  telephone calls using VOIP, streaming music or simply if you want Wifi throughout the house without the need for a cable.
